Did you have a relaxing Mother’s Day? Thanks to FSM, 40 local mums had a lovely late Mother’s Day treat on Monday when they were invited to a special pamper day hosted by FSM and Cut Above.
“Last year the father’s team had a family fun day for Father’s Day, and it was really successful,” says social worker Candel Nadruku, the brains behind the pamper day. “A lot of our mums asked, ‘will you do something for us?’ and I thought, we absolutely should.”
Candel got in touch with Cut Above, a Manukau-based hair and beauty training school, and asked if any of their students would like to come in to offer a beauty package.
“They thought it was a great idea, so we had four beauty therapists in at FSM doing makeovers, and then some of the mums were taken by taxi to the salon to have their hair done too.”
All FSM staff were asked to invite the hard-working mums they support, with the team offering onsite child care for those who wanted to take part but didn’t have anyone who could look after their little ones.
“I’ve wanted to learn how to do my makeup properly for ages,” said one young mum, Emma. “I’ve got four kids so it’s hard to find the time or the money to do something like this usually. I struggle to even buy the makeup! I can’t wait to get some tips.”
Another mum Jennifer said she always put her kids first, it was nice to be able to do something for herself.
“It’s great to have some fun, to remind myself that I can be beautiful and not just a stressed-out mum at home,” said Jennifer. “I only wear makeup for special occasions and I don’t normally spend money on myself. It’s great to be able to do something like this.”
Candel was pleased with the turn out and proud FSM could give some local mums the chance to feel special.
“It’s great to be able to give these mums some time to themselves, even if it’s just 20 minutes,” said Candel. “It’s a simple thing, but a real treat.”
